eating the east bay pt. II

It feels really great to be more mature than someone nearly twice my age. Actually it’s really hard. At least I have goals and food adventures to look forward to.
Oscar’s: so much better than the Smokehouse.

Dona Tomas! My + Caro’s first time.

Caro and Daniel both got the seared ahi tuna “veracruzano” with this amazing zucchini corn pudding!

Jane got the Pepe Pepino: Hendrick’s gin, Cointreau, lime and fresh cucumber. It was everything a cocktail should be and way better than the Mai Tai I ordered.

What can I say? I can never resist carnitas. These were pretty good; though the beans could’ve had more flavor.

Jane’s chicken mole enchiladas.

Lois the Pie Queen FINALLY. Jane and I were the biggest fat asses of this brunch. You’ll see why.
The tuna melt — always a solid choice and fairly inexpensive by Lois standards.

Hot link, grits, eggs and a biscuit. My Lois mainstay is pretty much along these lines (Caro always goes for the hot link whereas I tend to opt for the turkey-chicken sausage.)

My plate overfloweth with the CATFISH SUNDAY SPECIAL with mac ‘n cheese, potato salad, corn and a biscuit. I think the folks at Lois got a kick out of serving me a portion this ridiculous.

My meal also came with this salad, which was topped with shredded cheddar cheese lol.

Jane got the smothered chicken with grits and eggs. Damn girl.

Lois biscuits are so delightful. Especially when smothered with that amazing jam.

And to top it all off, Margaux (that goddess, our most favorite server ever) brought three free slices of the lemon icebox pie to our table! It was so cold and delicious. It’s as though she sensed we were leaving soon and wanted to remind us why we should always come back.

Hibiscus: after a long, hard and shitty day at work Caro and I both really needed to treat ourselves. We had intended on sucking it up and dropping major bux at Flora but it was closed (!!). Luckily Hibiscus is just down the street. (Sorry these photos suck.)
The two starters we ordered, namely, the baby gem salad with beets and pickled anchovies and the conch ceviche, were both pretty lacking in the seafood. The salad came with like three pickled anchovies and the ceviche was mostly a mix of (albeit delicious) jicama and other veg.

My entree was a huge pork chop that was perfectly cooked with the tastiest sauce ever. Sorry I can’t be more specific — I was a bit preoccupied at the time and so didn’t pay much attention to the menu. Caro’s curry goat stew was likewise extremely tasty.

Overall I’d say Hibiscus had strong entrees, attractive servers, outstanding riesling and ample seating (I guess it was a Monday night). That’s enough to keep me coming back!
