eating the east bay pt. III

by michelletranny

Oh mah lawd, we are getting so close to conquering this bucket list! And just in time, too: we move this Friday. Don’t be fooled by this post — we’ve made more progress than this, I’m just a little behind in uploading/posting pics.

These photos were taken like end of July/beginning of August. That weekend I ended up trying a lot of new things, actually. Feels nice to still be discovering the new on this ol’ side of the bay.

Ooops, we went to Beer Revolution again!

I made a better beer choice this time though. I luh may some chimay!

After BeerRev, a few of us ventured over to Fruitvale El Farolito! OMG SO DELISH. Caro’s right; I think it is better than the El Farolito in the Mission.

These photos remind me of hyenas devouring a zebra carcass. Don’t you agree?

Carnitas with that creamy salsa verde? Oh yez. I am addicted to carnitas.

That Sunday, Caro and I finally had a moment to get in some quality time, so we cycled over to Arizmendi, a few blocks down on San Pablo. The pizza of the day was zucchini, spinach, and herbed goat cheese spread with thyme and lemon. It was really, really good. The goat cheese spread was a delicious addition – definitely one to remember for pizza night!

Afterwards we cycled down San Pablo to Missouri Lounge and arrived at 3.50 – ten minutes before it opened. Once the doors opened I immediately ordered a Moscow Mule, which was essentially a glass of ice filled with vodka and a splash of ginger ale and lime. Couldn’t taste the alcohol though… it was actually quite refreshing and pleasing to the palate.

First people in the bar —-”>” only people on the back patio.

We ordered two more Moscow Mules and the bartender gave us 2 for 1. Tyte! We chased these with a few house specials: a beer and a shot of whiskey for $5.

After passing out face down on Caroline’s bed for 45 minutes, we met up with Matt and Jane and went to De Afghanan on University Ave. in Berkeley.

An order of potato and leek bolani for the table:

Quabili pallow, a favorite of M+J’s. Lamb buried in basmati rice with raisins and carrots. Ryan and Caro split an order too.

Apparently this place is all about the lamb but I wasn’t really in a lamb mood that day. I tried Jane’s Chupon Kebab though, and the lamb was indeed killed young and incredibly tasty.

I had the combination kebab with teka beef and chicken. The rice and meat were both very well-seasoned, and almost more delicious eaten cold as leftovers.

If you’re the sort of person to enjoy *fun* beverages at restaurants, then you would certainly be pleased with the offerings at De Afghanan!

If you’re the sort of person to enjoy smothering your food in delicious, spichee sauces (as so many of my friends are), then you would also be pleased to come here. The green sauce was a win. The guy at the counter gave us an assortment of free side dishes and bread to go with our meal as well. Yum yum yum.
